The Swan Valley European history begins with the founding of the Swan River Colony in 1829 under Captain James Stirling, who established Perth, Fremantle and Guildford. Guildford became an inland port at the furthest navigable point on the Swan River.
Viticulture took root almost immediately. The first vines were planted around 1830 near South Guildford, and by 1836 Houghton had been established as the region largest producer, making the Swan Valley WA oldest wine region.
Guildford grew as the Valley market and administrative town through the nineteenth century, retaining a remarkably intact colonial townscape, classified by the National Trust and federally heritage-listed.
In the twentieth century, post-war Croatian and Italian immigrants expanded commercial winemaking, and the Valley diversified into table grapes and other produce. Today it spans suburbs including Caversham, Herne Hill and West Swan, all within the City of Swan.
For us it is a long, scenic eastern run, priced simply at a flat $4/km, quoted upfront, ideal for estate and winery events.
