The City of Rockingham is one of Australia's fastest-growing municipalities, with an estimated resident population of over 154,000 spread across 37 kilometres of spectacular Indian Ocean coastline. It is a community built around families, outdoor recreation, strong local networks and a deep connection to the sea.
Alexander and Kate run regular backyard movie nights in their own Parmelia backyard for family and friends. We know what works because we use it ourselves. Every week. 🏭 Our Rockingham storyOne of our very first screen setups was right here in Rockingham. We arrived three hours early. The screen at the time was made from Oxford fabric, a cheaper woven polyester material that was common in early pop-up cinema hire. It took us the full three hours to get it right.
That event taught us a lot. We learned how to streamline our setup to 90 minutes. We invested in higher-grade screen material that produces a sharper, brighter, more even picture surface. We refined everything from how we cable the projector to how we orient the screen relative to ambient light.
Some competitors in Perth still use Oxford fabric screens. We do not. Every screen we deploy now produces a noticeably better picture. Rockingham is where we learned that the difference matters.
Free community event · Torcross ReserveWe have also run free community cinema events at Torcross Reserve in Rockingham. Running a free event is something we genuinely enjoy. It is how we give back to a community that has supported us from our very first setup. The reserve works well for the 5m screen and a relaxed community crowd.

How it worksRockingham carries one of the most distinctive origin stories of any Perth suburb. The suburb takes its name directly from a sailing ship, the Rockingham, which arrived on 14 May 1830 carrying settlers recruited by entrepreneur Thomas Peel. The ship ran aground on the beach in Cockburn Sound and was eventually abandoned after failed attempts to refloat her. Settlers who camped near the wreck began using "Rockingham Town" as their address, and the name has remained ever since.
The traditional custodians of the Rockingham area are the Whadjuk Noongar people, who traversed and cared for this land and coastline for an estimated 45,000 years before European settlement. The entire City of Rockingham sits within Whadjuk Noongar Boodja.
Rockingham was first surveyed and offered for sale in 1847, but significant development did not occur until 1872 when a railway and jetty were constructed to export jarrah timber and sandalwood from Jarrahdale. The suburb operated as an active timber port until Fremantle's Inner Harbour opened in 1897, allowing larger ships to bypass Rockingham entirely. By the early 1900s the port had closed, and Rockingham's transformation into a seaside resort town began.
In 1876 Rockingham was the site of one of the most daring rescue missions in Australian history. Six Irish Fenian political prisoners were smuggled from a work party near the coast and rowed out to the American whaling ship Catalpa, which then outran a pursuing government vessel and carried the Fenians to freedom in America. A memorial to this event stands near Rockingham Beach and is documented in detail at the Rockingham Museum.
Just off the Rockingham coast sits the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, protecting Penguin Island, Seal Island and the surrounding waters. The marine park is home to a resident population of wild bottlenose dolphins, Australian sea lions and little penguins. An evening outdoor cinema on the Rockingham foreshore with the marine park visible across the water is an experience few Perth suburbs can offer.
The City of Rockingham achieved formal City status on 12 November 1988. Today it encompasses 260 square kilometres of land, 37 kilometres of Indian Ocean coastline, and the naval facilities of HMAS Stirling on Garden Island. With an estimated resident population of over 154,000 as of 2024, Rockingham is among Australia's fastest-growing cities. The full history, from the shipwreck to the Catalpa escape, is preserved at the Rockingham Museum on the corner of Flinders Lane and Kent Street, open Tuesday through Sunday, entry $2.50.
