About the area

A Brief History of Midland

Midland began as a railway junction town in the 1890s, where rail lines met on the eastern edge of the Perth settlement, originally known as Midland Junction.

The defining event was the relocation of the WA Government Railway Workshops from Fremantle, operating at Midland from 1904. For roughly 90 years the workshops were the main facility for WAGR rolling stock, employing thousands and shaping the town economy.

Civic infrastructure followed, including the Midland Town Hall in 1906 and a Carnegie Library in 1911. In the 1970s the opening of Midland Gate shifted commercial activity toward car-oriented retail.

The Railway Workshops closed in 1994 and the heritage-listed site has since been redeveloped to include a university campus and a hospital. Today Midland is the administrative centre of the City of Swan and a strategic metropolitan centre.

For us it is a long eastern run, priced simply at a flat $4/km, quoted upfront, with no weekend or public holiday surcharge.
