What you need to know
What You Need to Know About Outdoor Cinema in Melville
Swan River foreshore events: The Attadale foreshore and Point Walter reserve in Bicton are two of Perth's finest outdoor cinema locations. Both sit on the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) with open water views and flat reserve space. The Swan Canning Riverpark is managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and events on riverfront land may require separate approval on top of a City of Melville permit. Allow at least 4 to 6 weeks for foreshore bookings.
Evening conditions in Melville: Melville's riverside suburbs carry a pleasant afternoon sea breeze that typically eases by 7pm to 8pm. March through May is outstanding for outdoor cinema here: dark by 7pm, temperatures of 19 to 24 degrees, and almost no wind by evening. Summer works well but plan for a later start of 8:30pm in December and January. Check the
BOM Perth forecast on the day.
Murdoch health and education precinct: Fiona Stanley Hospital, St John of God Murdoch, and Murdoch University collectively employ thousands of people in the southern Melville suburbs. Corporate outdoor cinema events are a strong format for this precinct. The 5m screen from $732 works well for staff events of 50 to 200 people.
School fundraisers in Melville: Winthrop, Murdoch, Kardinya, Booragoon, Willagee, Samson, and Bull Creek schools all run outdoor cinema fundraisers. With 33km travel the 5m screen totals $732, and 150 tickets at $12 leaves strong profit after film licensing. Term 1 and Term 4 are busiest. Book 4 to 6 weeks out.
🏭 The Kardinya Park story
Kate used to work at Kardinya Park Hall. One afternoon Alexander arrived early to pick her up and, with time to spare, wandered through the park. He came across an outdoor amphitheatre stage tucked in among the trees and thought it was genuinely impressive for a suburban park.
Then, literally the following week, he had a booking at Kardinya. A proper small world moment. It was only when he typed the address into Google Maps on his way out that he made the connection. Same park. Same amphitheatre. Small world. We have run events at Kardinya Park since, and the amphitheatre stage makes for one of the more atmospheric outdoor cinema settings in the City of Melville.

About Melville
A Brief History of the City of Melville
The City of Melville is one of Perth's most established and desirable inner-southern communities, with a population of over 110,000 across 18 suburbs and some of Perth's finest Swan River frontage. Understanding its history explains the character and strength of the community that makes outdoor cinema events here so well attended.
Melville through the ages
Pre-1829The Whadjuk Noongar people have lived on and cared for this land along the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) for tens of thousands of years. The Swan River was a central feature of Noongar culture, providing food, fresh water, and transport. Point Walter, known in the Noongar language as Dyoondalup, remains a significant Noongar cultural site and is actively managed in collaboration with traditional owners by the City of Melville.
1829The Swan River Colony is established. Early land grants along the Swan River in what is now Melville are used for farming and market gardening. The rich sandy loam soils and reliable river access make the area productive, supplying fresh produce to the growing Perth settlement through what are now Palmyra, Bicton, and Attadale.
1917The Shire of Melville is established, bringing formal local government to the area. The name honours Viscount Melville, Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, the British statesman who served as First Lord of the Admiralty in the early nineteenth century, following the colonial naming conventions of the time.
1940sPost-World War II suburban expansion transforms agricultural land into residential suburbs. Returning servicemen and young families move into developing suburbs of Palmyra, Willagee, Samson, and Kardinya through the 1950s. The State Housing Commission builds one of Perth's largest concentrations of public housing in Willagee during this period.
1970sRiverside suburbs of Applecross, Mount Pleasant, Attadale, and Ardross become some of Perth's most sought-after residential addresses. Swan River frontage and proximity to the CBD via Canning Highway drive property values upward. Murdoch University opens in 1975, beginning the transformation of the Murdoch area into a major education precinct.
1994The City of Melville achieves formal City status as its population exceeds the required threshold. The City now encompasses approximately 56 square kilometres across 18 suburbs, with a resident population of over 110,000.
2014Fiona Stanley Hospital opens in Murdoch, one of Australia's largest public hospital complexes. Combined with St John of God Murdoch Hospital and Murdoch University, the Murdoch precinct becomes a major employment and services hub in Melville's southern suburbs.
TodayThe City of Melville continues to evolve as one of Perth's premier inner-southern communities. The Swan River foreshore, Kardinya Park, Wireless Hill, and a strong network of schools and community facilities make it one of the most active outdoor event areas in Perth's south.
Kaddidjiny: the Noongar name for Kardinya
The suburb of Kardinya takes its name from the Noongar word Kaddidjiny, reflecting the deep linguistic and cultural connection between the Whadjuk Noongar people and the landscape of the Melville area. The City of Melville actively works with Noongar traditional owners on the naming and interpretation of its public places. Kardinya Park, where Perth Pop-Up Movies has run events, sits on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja.
Dyoondalup: Point Walter
Point Walter in Bicton is known in the Noongar language as Dyoondalup, a place of significant spiritual and cultural importance. The reserve occupies a peninsula extending into the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) with water on three sides and is one of the most atmospheric outdoor cinema locations in all of Perth. Events at this location require coordination with both the City of Melville and the Swan Canning Riverpark authority.
