What you need to know
What You Need to Know About Outdoor Cinema in Joondalup
Joondalup is our longest regular run: At 65km, Joondalup is one of our furthest regular delivery suburbs. That travel cost is real and it is in the price. What it means in practice is that we plan Joondalup events carefully, confirm logistics early, and do not cut corners on setup time. If we are driving 65km each way, the event is going to be run properly.
Power at Joondalup parks: Many City of Joondalup parks and reserves do not have accessible mains power near event areas. For events at Neil Hawkins Park, Burns Beach, Mullaloo Beach, and Yellagonga Regional Park, a generator or silent inverter is usually required. We include one from $150. Check with the City of Joondalup when booking your permit about power access at your specific venue.
Best season for Joondalup outdoor cinema: March through May is outstanding across the northern suburbs. The afternoon sea breeze settles by 7pm to 8pm, evenings sit at 19 to 24 degrees, and full dark arrives by 7:30pm in autumn. Summer works well with a later 8:30pm start. The coastal suburbs of Hillarys, Ocean Reef, and Burns Beach benefit especially from the calm autumn evenings after the sea breeze drops.
Film licensing for public Joondalup events: The City of Joondalup already runs community outdoor cinema events (including Telethon Community Cinemas at ECU Joondalup Pines), which means the council and local residents are familiar with the format and enthusiastic participants. For your own public event you will need a film licence through
Roadshow PPL. We will walk you through this as part of the booking process.
🌋 The cyclone week
We had a Joondalup event booked and two days before the date, we made the call to cancel. Not just that event but seven events that week across Perth. A cyclone was tracking toward the coast and the forecast was not something we were prepared to ignore.
The day of the Joondalup event, it rained like you would not believe. Properly biblical. Every single client we had cancelled that week called or messaged to say they were glad we had made the decision when we did. All seven events were rebooked later in the month and ran without a problem. That is how we handle weather at Perth Pop-Up Movies. We do not wait and hope. We call it early and we rebook.

About Joondalup
A Brief History of Joondalup, Western Australia
Joondalup is Perth's major northern city, a planned metropolitan centre developed from the 1980s onward. Today it is one of WA's fastest-growing regional cities, home to over 200,000 residents across 22 suburbs and a genuine civic hub for Perth's northern corridor.
Joondalup through the ages
Pre-1829The Whadjuk Noongar people have lived on and cared for the land around Lake Joondalup (Yellagonga) and the surrounding coastal plain for tens of thousands of years. The wetland system of Yellagonga Regional Park was a central resource for Noongar communities. The name Joondalup is derived from a Noongar word, though its exact meaning and origin have multiple interpretations in the literature.
1829European settlement of the Swan River Colony begins. The northern coastal plain around present-day Joondalup is initially used for farming and grazing. Settlement is sparse for most of the nineteenth century, with the area remaining primarily agricultural land.
1970sThe State Government begins planning for a new regional city in Perth's northern corridor. The Joondalup Development Corporation is established to manage the creation of a planned urban centre. The project becomes one of Australia's largest planned urban developments.
1978Construction of the Joondalup City Centre begins in earnest. The planning model draws on international precedents for new urban centres, incorporating a CBD, university, hospital, and extensive parkland around Lake Joondalup.
1987Edith Cowan University (then Western Australian College of Advanced Education) opens its Joondalup campus, establishing the education precinct that remains central to the city's identity today.
1998The City of Joondalup is established as an independent local government authority following the merger of the northern portions of Wanneroo. The City takes over responsibility for the urban area's parks, infrastructure, and community services.
2002Joondalup Health Campus opens, establishing the northern suburbs' major public hospital and cementing the city's role as a full-service metropolitan centre rather than a suburban satellite.
TodayWith over 200,000 residents across 22 suburbs, Joondalup is WA's second-largest city by population. Neil Hawkins Park, Yellagonga Regional Park, Hillarys Boat Harbour, Burns Beach, and the ECU campus make it one of Perth's most active outdoor event destinations.
Yellagonga and Lake Joondalup
Lake Joondalup and the surrounding Yellagonga Regional Park are named after Yellagonga, a Whadjuk Noongar man who was the leader of the Mooro group during the early years of the Swan River Colony. He was one of the key figures in the early contact period between Whadjuk Noongar people and European settlers. The park and its wetlands remain a significant ecological and cultural landscape, home to over 130 bird species and extensive seasonal wetlands. Neil Hawkins Park, where Perth Pop-Up Movies has run outdoor cinema events, sits within the Yellagonga regional corridor.
