Ellenbrook began in the early-to-mid 1990s on former bush and semi-rural land in the City of Swan, launched in 1993 as a joint venture between the WA Government and private landowners, and shaped into a deliberately master-planned town rather than a conventional subdivision.
The defining idea was a town built from a series of self-contained villages, each with its own character but knitted together around a central town centre. Villages developed over the decades include Woodlake, The Bridges, Coolamon, Charlotte Vineyard, Malvern Springs and Annie Landing, each with its own parks and open space.
Commercial and civic life centres on Ellenbrook Central on Main Street, a regional shopping centre with well over 100 tenancies anchored by the major supermarkets, Big W and Kmart, alongside the community library. This town-centre focus is unusual for an outer Perth suburb and gives the area a genuine community core.
For most of its life Ellenbrook biggest drawback was transport, as it grew rapidly but relied on road links and buses. That changed in December 2024 when the Ellenbrook railway line opened, connecting the suburb to the network with roughly a 30-minute run to the Perth CBD and accelerating further growth.
The net effect is a young, family-heavy, fast-growing community with large new homes, masses of public open space, active sporting reserves and a strong village social fabric, exactly the conditions that suit backyard and community outdoor cinema, with warm still inland nights extending the comfortable screening season.
