Local knowledge

What You Need to Know About Outdoor Cinema in Wannanup

Time it with the tide: The Dawesville Channel and estuary mean breezy evenings, so we schedule the screen for after sundown when the sea breeze eases and the foreshore settles into a calm, watchable night.
Mind the sand and salt: On Avalon or Village beaches we set up on the grassed foreshore rather than soft sand, keeping the screen stable and gear clear of salt spray for a clean picture.
Bookable reserves: Wannanup reserves sit under the City of Mandurah, so larger foreshore screenings may need a hire permit, and we help you sort the booking before the event date.
Backyard and canal blocks: Many Wannanup homes back onto canals with generous outdoor space, perfect for a private backyard cinema, we just need a flat lawn and access for the screen.
Bring layers and chairs: Even in summer the coastal night cools quickly here, so guests do best with warm layers, low chairs or bean bags and a rug for a comfortable estuary side film.

About the area

A Brief History of Wannanup

Wannanup sits on Binjareb Noongar country, on a low coastal strip pressed between the Harvey Estuary to the east and the Indian Ocean to the west. For thousands of years this estuary and its rich fishing grounds sustained Noongar life across the wider Peel waterways.

Wannanup is the original Aboriginal name for the locality once known as Florida. When the Dawesville Channel divided the old settlement, the northern portion was formally regazetted as Wannanup in 1996, restoring the older name to the map.

Through the early 1990s the area transformed with the Dawesville Channel, cut between 1990 and completed in April 1994 to flush the estuary. The Port Bouvard development followed, with Northport and Eastport canal estates, a marina and beaches replacing the old fishing settlement.

Today Wannanup is a fast growing City of Mandurah suburb, its population climbing from a few hundred at the start of the century to several thousand. It blends canal homes, holiday escapes and a coastal community focused on boating, beaches and the waterways.

From our Kwinana base it is a straightforward run south down the coast to Wannanup, and we keep delivery simple and honest at a flat $4/km so a movie night by the estuary stays easy to plan.
