Southern River sits in Perth south-eastern corridor within the City of Gosnells, taking its name from the watercourse that runs through the district. For most of the twentieth century it was a sparsely populated rural fringe rather than a true suburb.
The land was originally given over to farming and animal-related enterprises, including egg production, horse-breeding properties and boarding kennels. Population was minimal, with fewer than 500 people living across the locality.
A pocket of that older character survives in the area bounded by Ranford, Passmore, Matison and Holmes streets, long associated with greyhound racing and the breeding and showing of pedigree dogs and cats.
From the 2000s onward the suburb was progressively rezoned and redeveloped into medium-density residential estates, with new roads, parks, gardens and wetland reserves laid out to support a fast-growing population.
That growth brought local schools and shops with it, including Southern Grove and Bletchley Park primary schools and, more recently, Yarralinka Primary School, alongside The Vale Shopping Centre on Warton Road.
