Local knowledge

What You Need to Know About Outdoor Cinema in Scarborough

Plan for the Fremantle Doctor: Scarborough is a west-facing, exposed beachfront and the afternoon sea breeze is strong and reliable in summer, so we heavily ballast the screen and orient its back to the onshore wind.
Use the amphitheatre as a ready venue: The Scarborough Amphitheatre already has grassed tiers, an ocean backdrop and amenities, hireable directly through the City of Stirling.
Mind the busy precinct calendar: The redeveloped foreshore is one of Perth most active event and dining strips, so book early and coordinate timing with the City events team.
Parking is plentiful but fills fast: Around 1,200 beach bays plus pool and amphitheatre parking still saturate on peak summer evenings, so advise patrons to arrive early.
Account for salt air: Coastal salt spray and damp sea air are hard on electronics, so we protect the gear, wipe down lenses and never leave kit exposed overnight.

About the area

A Brief History of Scarborough

Scarborough has been one of Perth premier beach-resort destinations since the early-to-mid twentieth century, drawing crowds to its wide Indian Ocean surf beach and shaping a defining part of Perth coastal identity.

The suburb most prominent landmark dates to the 1980s, when the high-rise Observation City hotel was built directly on the beachfront, eighteen storeys that remain Perth only beachside high-rise tower, now the Rendezvous Hotel.

For decades the foreshore was dominated by car parking and ageing facilities. Between roughly 2015 and 2018 a major foreshore redevelopment transformed the beachfront into an urban-beach promenade with recreational spaces, public artworks, cafes and a transit hub.

A centrepiece was the Scarborough Beach Pool, a heated outdoor aquatic centre and the first to earn a 6 Star Green Star rating in WA, alongside a competition-grade skate bowl, bouldering wall and playgrounds. The beachfront amphitheatre was retained and reworked.

Surf, swimming and beach culture remain central to Scarborough identity, and the redeveloped foreshore was explicitly designed for year-round events. A built-in grassed amphitheatre, a vast flat esplanade, an ocean backdrop and a crowd-drawing dining precinct make Scarborough exceptionally well suited to outdoor cinema, provided the sea breeze is managed.
