School fundraiser, City of Stirling

150 tickets at $12 ($1,800 gross) minus the 5m screen ($788 delivered) and film licence (~$400) = ~$612 net profit. A strong result for a P&C movie night on a Stirling school oval.

What you get for $388 vs budget operators

For $388 delivered you get a 3,000+ lumen projector, a professional PA, full setup and pack-down, and $10M public liability cover. Local knowledge

What You Need to Know About Outdoor Cinema in Stirling

One council, many different streetscapes: The City of Stirling is unusually varied. Scarborough and Trigg are coastal and breezy, the inland suburbs of Dianella, Yokine and Inglewood are leafy and established, and Osborne Park and Balcatta carry a working light-industrial and market-garden heritage. The right screen size and setup depend on your specific street, so tell us the suburb and the block when you enquire and we will advise accordingly.
The coastal sea breeze: Scarborough, Trigg and North Beach catch the afternoon sea breeze directly. It usually arrives in the early afternoon and eases after sunset. For coastal foreshore events we plan the screen orientation and anchoring around the wind, and the inland Stirling suburbs are more sheltered if calm conditions matter for your night. Check the BOM Perth forecast on the day.
Permits for foreshore and reserve events: The Scarborough foreshore, Trigg Beach, Lake Gwelup and the City's larger reserves are popular but managed spaces. Public events on them need a City of Stirling permit, and the foreshore amphitheatre area in particular is in demand, so apply early. Private backyard events need no permit at all. We supply every insurance and compliance document a permit application requires.
Best season for Stirling: March through May, and again September through November. Coastal Stirling stays comfortable into autumn, and the inland suburbs hold warm still evenings well. Full dark arrives by around 7pm in March and April. Summer events work well too with a later 8:30pm start once the heat of the day has passed.
🏖 The Scarborough sea breeze

We were setting up on the Scarborough side of the City for an evening event when the afternoon sea breeze came through right on schedule, exactly as it does most summer afternoons on that stretch of coast. Nothing dramatic, just the steady, reliable Fremantle Doctor doing its thing.

We had oriented and anchored the screen for it, so the setup held perfectly and the breeze actually dropped away beautifully after sunset for the film. It is a good reminder that on the Stirling coast you plan around the wind rather than hope it stays away. We always do.

About the area

A Brief History of Stirling, Western Australia

The City of Stirling is one of Perth's largest and most diverse local government areas, stretching from the Indian Ocean coast at Scarborough and Trigg through the inland suburbs to Mirrabooka and Dianella. Its history runs from tens of thousands of years of Whadjuk Noongar custodianship through coastal recreation, market gardens, and one of the strongest postwar migration stories in Western Australia.

The City of Stirling through the ages

Pre-1829
The Whadjuk Noongar people are the traditional custodians of the land now within the City of Stirling, including the coast, the limestone ridges, and the wetlands of Herdsman Lake and Lake Gwelup. These freshwater wetlands and the coastline were central to Whadjuk Noongar life and movement across country for tens of thousands of years.
1829
European settlement of the Swan River Colony begins under Captain James Stirling, the colony's first Governor, after whom the City is later named. The coastal and inland areas north of Perth are gradually taken up for grazing, farming, and market gardens through the nineteenth century.
Early 1900s
The Scarborough and Trigg coast develops a beach-recreation heritage as Perth residents travel out to the ocean for the day. Inland, the Osborne Park and Balcatta areas become known for market gardens supplying fresh produce to the growing city, a character that persisted for decades.
1950s
Strong postwar European migration reshapes the inland suburbs. Italian and Macedonian communities in particular settle around Osborne Park, Balcatta, and later Mirrabooka, establishing market gardens, businesses, and community institutions that still define the area's culture today.
1971
The City of Stirling is incorporated as a local government area, named after Captain James Stirling. It brings together the rapidly growing coastal and inland suburbs north of Perth under one council, and quickly becomes one of the most populous municipalities in Western Australia.
Late 1900s
The coastal suburbs consolidate as established residential areas while Scarborough grows as a beachside destination. The inland suburbs mature into leafy, settled neighbourhoods, and the City's wetlands at Herdsman Lake and Lake Gwelup are increasingly recognised and protected for their environmental value.
Today
The City of Stirling is home to a large and culturally diverse population across some thirty suburbs. The redeveloped Scarborough foreshore, the established inland suburbs, the Osborne Park commercial precinct, and significant wetland reserves give the City a character unlike any other in Perth, coastal and inland, old and new, all under one council.

The Scarborough foreshore

The Scarborough beachfront is one of Perth's most recognisable coastal destinations. A major foreshore redevelopment transformed the area into a year-round events and recreation precinct, with an amphitheatre, pool, and open event spaces that regularly host community gatherings. It is a spectacular, if breezy, setting for outdoor cinema, and one that draws people from right across the metropolitan area.

Herdsman Lake and Lake Gwelup

Herdsman Lake and Lake Gwelup are two of the most significant wetlands in Perth's northern suburbs, bordering several City of Stirling suburbs. Both are important habitats for birdlife and have been increasingly protected and rehabilitated as regional open space. The reserves around them offer rare natural settings for community events within an otherwise built-up part of the city.
