What You Need to Know About Outdoor Cinema in Nedlands

The blocks here are exceptional: Nedlands and Dalkeith have some of Perth's most generous established residential properties. Lots that were subdivided in the early twentieth century and never significantly reduced since. The rear gardens on many Nedlands and Dalkeith properties can comfortably take the 5m screen, and some can accommodate the 8m. If you have been thinking of the 3m but have a large garden, describe it to us first. You may be underestimating what you have.
UWA and the Crawley campus: The University of Western Australia campus at Crawley is one of Perth's most beautiful outdoor event environments. The limestone architecture, the Great Court, and the river foreshore setting make it an extraordinary outdoor cinema backdrop for university events, fundraisers, and community nights. UWA event permits are required. Allow 4 to 6 weeks.
Matilda Bay at dusk: Matilda Bay Reserve at Crawley, where the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) bends into its most scenic reach, is one of Perth's genuinely spectacular outdoor settings. Evening light on the river, black swans, the UWA boatshed in the background. The 3m or 5m screen at Matilda Bay for a community event is something your guests will remember for a long time.
🏠 The backyard that had room

We ran a 5m screen event at a Nedlands property. The backyard was enormous. Not large by suburban standards. Genuinely, properly enormous. A garden that most venues would charge a facility fee to use.

The 5m screen sat in it the way a 3m sits in a normal backyard. There was room to spare. It was a reminder that outdoor cinema hire in Nedlands is a different conversation to most Perth suburbs. If you have a property like this, do not default to the 3m out of habit. Ask us what actually fits.

Best season for Nedlands outdoor cinema: March through May. Nedlands sits on the Swan River foreshore and benefits from the same still autumn evenings that make Applecross and Cottesloe such excellent cinema settings. The river moderates temperature and the air is warm and settled by 7pm. Full dark arrives by 7pm in April. Summer events work with an 8:30pm start.

About the area

A Brief History of Nedlands, Western Australia

Nedlands is one of Perth's most prestigious inner suburbs, defined by its large established properties, proximity to the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River), the University of Western Australia, and Kings Park. It has a longer and more distinguished history than its quiet residential character might suggest.

Nedlands through the ages

Pre-1829
The Whadjuk Noongar people are the traditional custodians of the Nedlands area and the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) foreshore. The river was central to Whadjuk Noongar culture and daily life. The area around what is now Nedlands, Crawley, and Matilda Bay was part of the Whadjuk Boodja (country) that Noongar people have cared for for tens of thousands of years.
Naming
The suburb name Nedlands derives from the early colonial property "Nedlands Farm," one of the earliest land grants in the Swan River Colony. The exact origin of the property name has been debated, but the farm was established by early settlers on the riverside land that now forms the suburb. The area was briefly known as "Hollywood" in the late 1800s before the Nedlands name became established.
1829
European settlement of the Swan River Colony begins. Land along the southern bank of the Swan River in what is now Nedlands is among the earliest to be granted to settlers. The riverside location and fertile soil attract early colonists, and the area begins its long history as one of Perth's most desirable addresses.
1913
The University of Western Australia is founded and opens its Crawley campus, transforming the Nedlands area into an academic precinct. Sir John Winthrop Hackett donates £425,000 to UWA, enabling the construction of the iconic limestone buildings that define the campus today. The UWA presence gives Nedlands a cultural and intellectual character that persists to the present day.
Early 1900s
Nedlands develops as one of Perth's premier residential suburbs. Large lots, generous setbacks, and established gardens create the leafy streetscapes that define the suburb. The Federation and interwar homes built during this period on generous blocks are now among Perth's most valued residential properties.
1960s
The Perth Children's Hospital opens in Nedlands (the original Princess Margaret Hospital site, subsequently rebuilt as Perth Children's Hospital on the same site), cementing the suburb's role as a centre for both education and healthcare in the inner Perth corridor.
Today
Nedlands and adjacent Dalkeith consistently rank among Perth's highest-value residential suburbs. UWA, Perth Children's Hospital, Kings Park, Matilda Bay, and some of Perth's finest established residential properties make it one of the most distinctive and desirable inner-city addresses in WA.

UWA and the Winthrop legacy

The University of Western Australia at Crawley is consistently ranked among Australia's top universities and is one of the Group of Eight research universities. The campus architecture, designed in the Collegiate Gothic style with local limestone, is among the most beautiful in Australia. Sir John Winthrop Hackett's endowment funded the construction of the campus buildings, and Winthrop Hall remains one of Perth's most elegant event venues. For outdoor cinema events on the UWA campus, the grounds offer some of Perth's most extraordinary settings.

Matilda Bay and the Derbarl Yerrigan

Matilda Bay at Crawley, where the Derbarl Yerrigan bends into its most scenic reach, has been a gathering place for Perth residents since European settlement. The UWA Boat Club, the historic boatshed, black swans, and the evening light on the river make Matilda Bay one of Perth's most photographed outdoor settings. It is also one of the more unusual and atmospheric locations for outdoor cinema hire in the Nedlands area.
