Mundaring modern settlement grew out of timber and the railway. The Perth Hills had been worked by sawyers from the 1860s, and the opening of the Eastern Railway in 1884 transformed access. A sawmill in 1889 created a railway stopping place known as Gugeri Siding.
The name Mundaring derives from an Aboriginal name said to mean roughly a high place on a high place. The siding name had changed to Mundaring by 1894, and Mundaring was formally declared a townsite in 1898.
The town defining work is Mundaring Weir, built to dam the Helena River as the source of the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme. Devised by engineer C.Y. O’Connor under Premier Sir John Forrest, it was constructed between 1898 and 1903 to pump water hundreds of kilometres east to Kalgoorlie, at the time the longest water main in the world.
From these timber, rail and water-supply origins the district developed into the Shire of Mundaring, today a forested Perth Hills area of jarrah bushland, acreage and conservation reserves, with a strong tourism focus.
For us it is one of our longest runs up into the hills, priced simply at a flat $4/km, quoted upfront, with cool, dark, starry skies as the payoff.
