Malaga sits on land that was rural and lightly settled through the early-to-mid twentieth century on Perth then-northern fringe, within what is now the City of Swan. Unlike surrounding farming areas, it never developed as a township.
The suburb name was formally approved in 1969, its origin attributed either to the Spanish city of Malaga or to an Aboriginal word said to mean ironstone.
Malaga defining shift came when it was reserved as a light-industrial area in the 1970s, with major build-out through the 1980s, anchored by a Transperth bus depot and later a bus-building plant.
