The name Karrinyup derives from Careniup, a Noongar word for a nearby swamp, generally interpreted as the place where bush kangaroos graze. The current spelling was adopted in 1929 when the committee forming the Lake Karrinyup Country Club changed it.
Although land was subdivided as early as 1904, meaningful suburban growth did not begin until around 1957. The Lake Karrinyup course established the suburb long association with golf, later joined by the council-run Hamersley Public Golf Course.
The defining landmark is the Karrinyup Shopping Centre, which opened in 1973 and drew over 100,000 people on its first day. A major redevelopment completed in 2021 expanded it to roughly 109,000 square metres, adding cinemas and a dining and entertainment precinct, making it the largest shopping centre in suburban Perth.
Today Karrinyup character blends established mid-century homes, newer infill and apartments around the retail core, and large green anchors in its two golf courses and several council reserves. It is firmly a family-oriented suburb within the City of Stirling.
This mix suits outdoor cinema well: a built-in local audience, a major retail and entertainment drawcard already drawing residents out at night, and council reserves available for hire, all close enough to the coast for pleasant summer evenings.
