Local knowledge

What You Need to Know About Outdoor Cinema in Herron

Mind the mozzies: The estuary brings insects at dusk, so pack repellent and consider citronella around the seating area for a comfortable evening under the screen.
Dark skies are a gift: Herron has very little light pollution, which makes the projected image bright and crisp, just clear a flat patch of lawn facing away from any porch lights.
Watch the estuary breeze: Onshore wind can pick up after sunset near the water, so we peg the screen securely and angle it to shelter behind trees or a fence where we can.
Bring your own licence film: Backyard screenings of your own discs or streaming work fine, and we can arrange a public screening licence if your event is open to the wider community.
Plan for the drive: Herron is semi rural, so confirm gate access and a clear delivery path for our van, and let us know about soft sand or unsealed driveways in advance.

About the area

A Brief History of Herron

The land around Herron is Binjareb Noongar country, known traditionally as Koolijerrenup, a narrow strip of banksia and tuart woodland pressed between the Peel Harvey Estuary to the east and the lakes of Yalgorup to the west, rich in birdlife and seasonal food.

The locality takes its name from James and Isabella Herron, who arrived from Ireland in 1853 and took up grazing land here, eventually leasing thousands of acres of estuary country and building the early Herron homestead.

For more than a century Herron stayed sparsely settled, a scatter of farms, olive groves and orchards near Island Point with roadhouses serving traffic on the Old Coast Road, never developing the dense suburban streets of its neighbours.

Today Herron remains a quiet semi rural estuary locality of a few hundred residents within the City of Mandurah, valued for fishing, crabbing, kayaking and the Ramsar wetlands of Island Point Reserve rather than for shops or busy roads.

It is a calm, dark sky setting that suits a private cinema night beautifully, and a run south from our Kwinana base is straightforward at a flat $4/km.

For a private backyard party you can show whatever you own or stream, from Netflix and Disney+ to a DVD or a console. For any public or ticketed event, a public performance licence is needed and we will point you to the right one.
