Greenfields lies on Binjareb Noongar country within the wider Mandurah district, inland from the estuary on the gently rising flats beside the Serpentine River and the wetlands of Lake Goegrup, where waterways and bushland have long shaped local life.
The suburb takes its name from Greenfields Estate, a promotional name used by developers for the area around 1980. Earlier it was known by names including Goegrup and Riverside Gardens before the present title became official.
From the 1980s onward Greenfields grew steadily as a residential area, gathering smaller estates such as Country Roads, Norfolk Gardens, Riverside Gardens and Central Park, alongside ovals, schools and a growing number of retirement and lifestyle villages.
Today Greenfields is an established part of the City of Mandurah, anchored by the Peel Education Campus, the Peel Health Campus and the Mandurah Greenfields Shopping Centre on Pinjarra Road, blending family homes, sporting reserves and busy community services.
