Local knowledge

What You Need to Know About Outdoor Cinema in Lakelands

Use the freeway run: From Kwinana it is a clean Kwinana Freeway then Mandurah Road drive of about 32km, so afternoon set-ups for a dusk start are comfortable even mid-week.
Pick a lakeside backdrop: Black Swan Lake and the estate lakes give a natural water-and-bushland backdrop, frame the screen so the lake sits behind your audience for a standout night.
Book the district reserve: For larger crowds, the Lakelands Park reserve has flat turf, lighting, parking and toilets, lock in a shelter or oval through the City of Mandurah bookings officer early.
Mind the coastal breeze: Madora Bay sea breezes can pick up after sunset, so weight the screen frame well and angle it away from the prevailing south-westerly for a steady picture.
Lean on the train station: The 2023 Lakelands station and Shopping Centre make it easy for guests without cars to reach a community event, handy for school, club or estate movie nights.

About the area

A Brief History of Lakelands

Lakelands lies on Binjareb (Bindjareb) Noongar country in the Peel region, the northernmost suburb of the City of Mandurah. Its low, sandy coastal-plain landscape carries a north-to-south chain of natural lakes and wetlands, including Black Swan and Paganoni Lakes, long part of the living water network of this country.

The suburb takes its name straightforwardly from those lakes. The master-planned Lakelands Estate was built around the wetland chain, with parks, walking tracks and recreation areas deliberately laid out along the line of water bodies running through the community.

Developed by Peet Limited from the 2000s, Lakelands grew into a large new-housing community planned to exceed 2,500 lots. Schools followed, with Mandurah Baptist College opening in 2005 and Coastal Lakes College welcoming students from 2018, alongside Lakelands Primary School.

Today Lakelands is one of Mandurah fastest-growing, family-heavy suburbs, with the Lakelands Shopping Centre, the district Lakelands Park sports facility opened in 2020, and the Lakelands railway station opened in June 2023 giving a roughly fifty-minute rail link to central Perth.

For us, Lakelands is a tidy run south of our Kwinana base, around 32km straight down the Kwinana Freeway, billed at our flat $4/km, making a lakeside or reserve outdoor-cinema night easy to deliver.

For a private backyard party you can show whatever you own or stream, from Netflix and Disney+ to a DVD or a console. For any public or ticketed event, a public performance licence is needed and we will point you to the right one.
