About the area

A Brief History of Floreat

Floreat was conceived as a planned garden suburb on land held by the City of Perth, with subdivision gathering pace from the late 1930s and continuing through the post-war decades. Its Latin name, meaning let it flourish, reflects the City of Perth motto.

The suburb is defined by Perry Lakes Reserve, whose two lakes were created in the early 1960s as part of landscaping for the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, held at the adjacent Perry Lakes Stadium.

The 1962 Games left a lasting imprint on the area. The stadium and surrounding sporting facilities anchored Floreat identity for decades, and the stadium site was later redeveloped for housing after a new athletics stadium opened nearby in 2009.

Today Floreat is an affluent, established suburb characterised by wide verges, mature trees, generous lots and a deliberately green, low-density feel, with Bold Park bushland on its western flank and the coast a short distance beyond.

Large landscaped backyards, a settled population and abundant nearby parkland make Floreat strongly suited to outdoor cinema, whether intimate private events on spacious lawns or larger community screenings at Perry Lakes Reserve.
