Local knowledge

What You Need to Know About Outdoor Cinema in Coodanup

Use the estuary light: Set up for a screen start after sunset over the Peel Harvey water, when the foreshore cools and the still estuary surface keeps the evening calm and glare free.
Park near the lawns: Coodanup Foreshore has a formalised car park off Peel Parade, so unload gear close to the open grass and keep cables and seating clear of the walking path.
Mind the breeze: The open estuary edge can catch an afternoon sea breeze, so peg the screen firmly and angle it away from the water to keep the picture steady.
Bring bug cover: Estuary foreshores attract evening insects near dusk, so pack repellent and a few citronella options to keep guests comfortable through the feature film.
Book the space early: Reserves and halls around Coodanup are managed by the City of Mandurah through its Bookable portal, so confirm your booking well ahead for weekend movie nights.

About the area

A Brief History of Coodanup

Coodanup lies on Binjareb Noongar country on the northern shore of the Peel Harvey Estuary, where the Serpentine River meets the inlet. The Bindjareb people have gathered along these shallow estuary waters for thousands of years, drawing on rich fish and bird life.

The name origin is recorded as unclear, though in 1836 Lieutenant Henry Bunbury noted Colanup as a local Noongar name for the mouth of the Serpentine River. Coodanup is also said to mean a place of cooing swans.

European settlement spread slowly around the estuary, and the area was subdivided as the Coodanup Park Estate in 1956. The suburb was formally gazetted in 1970 as Mandurah grew from a quiet fishing town into a coastal regional centre.

Today Coodanup is a residential City of Mandurah suburb of around 4,400 people, defined by its long foreshore reserve. Recent City upgrades added a new playground, picnic shelters, paths and shorebird artwork celebrating its strong connection to estuary nature.

For us a Coodanup booking is a straightforward run south of our Kwinana base, charged at a flat $4/km so the travel cost stays clear and honest.

For a private backyard party you can show whatever you own or stream, from Netflix and Disney+ to a DVD or a console. For any public or ticketed event, a public performance licence is needed and we will point you to the right one.
We do the lot. We deliver to your Coodanup address, set up the screen, projector and sound, get it running, and come back to pack it all down. You just press play.
The 3m screen suits 25 to 30 people, which is right for most Coodanup backyards. For a bigger block, a street party or a school oval, the 5m screen handles up to around 230.
