Coodanup lies on Binjareb Noongar country on the northern shore of the Peel Harvey Estuary, where the Serpentine River meets the inlet. The Bindjareb people have gathered along these shallow estuary waters for thousands of years, drawing on rich fish and bird life.
The name origin is recorded as unclear, though in 1836 Lieutenant Henry Bunbury noted Colanup as a local Noongar name for the mouth of the Serpentine River. Coodanup is also said to mean a place of cooing swans.
European settlement spread slowly around the estuary, and the area was subdivided as the Coodanup Park Estate in 1956. The suburb was formally gazetted in 1970 as Mandurah grew from a quiet fishing town into a coastal regional centre.
Today Coodanup is a residential City of Mandurah suburb of around 4,400 people, defined by its long foreshore reserve. Recent City upgrades added a new playground, picnic shelters, paths and shorebird artwork celebrating its strong connection to estuary nature.
