Local knowledge

What You Need to Know About Outdoor Cinema in Clifton

Time it for low water: Visit the thrombolites between January and May when low lake levels reveal the reef, giving a dramatic natural backdrop for an early evening screening.
Bring everything in: Clifton is uninhabited bushland with no shops or services, so plan power, seating, food and water before the run down Old Coast Road.
Mind the national park: Yalgorup reserves are managed by DBCA, so secure permission for any event on park land and stick to formed parking and tracks to protect the lake.
Watch for wildlife at dusk: Tuart woodland here is busy with kangaroos and birdlife at dusk, so drive slowly on Mount John Road and keep food sealed during your night.
Pack warm layers: Lake breezes off the estuary and ocean make Clifton nights cooler than inland, so bring blankets, rugs and warm layers for a comfortable outdoor film.

About the area

A Brief History of Clifton

Clifton sits on Binjareb Noongar country, a slim strip of tuart woodland between Lake Clifton and Yalgorup National Park to the east and the Indian Ocean to the west. The lake holds the southern hemisphere largest thrombolite reef, living rock formations around 2,000 years old.

The Noongar people knew the area as Koolijerrenup. It was later renamed for Marshall Waller Clifton, who arrived as Chief Commissioner of the Western Australian Company settlement at Australind and went on to sit in the Legislative Council.

Pioneer families settled the surrounds from the 1850s, with the Herrons grazing cattle on thousands of leased acres. In 1920 a lime deposit drew the WA Portland Cement Company, and a townsite nearby was finally gazetted as Lake Clifton in 1923.

Today Clifton is an uninhabited locality of the City of Mandurah, valued for its lake, woodland and the thrombolite boardwalk in Yalgorup National Park. It draws walkers, birdwatchers and visitors rather than permanent residents.

For families gathering in this quiet corner of the Peel, we bring the cinema to you, running south from our Kwinana base at a flat $4/km.

The picture needs darkness, so we always start after dusk. In summer that is about 8:30pm; in autumn and winter it is dark by 6 to 7pm. We can arrive and set up earlier so everything is ready the moment the light drops.
For a private backyard party you can show whatever you own or stream, from Netflix and Disney+ to a DVD or a console. For any public or ticketed event, a public performance licence is needed and we will point you to the right one.
We do the lot. We deliver to your Clifton address, set up the screen, projector and sound, get it running, and come back to pack it all down. You just press play.
The 3m screen suits 25 to 30 people, which is right for most Clifton backyards. For a bigger block, a street party or a school oval, the 5m screen handles up to around 230.
