Clifton sits on Binjareb Noongar country, a slim strip of tuart woodland between Lake Clifton and Yalgorup National Park to the east and the Indian Ocean to the west. The lake holds the southern hemisphere largest thrombolite reef, living rock formations around 2,000 years old.
The Noongar people knew the area as Koolijerrenup. It was later renamed for Marshall Waller Clifton, who arrived as Chief Commissioner of the Western Australian Company settlement at Australind and went on to sit in the Legislative Council.
Pioneer families settled the surrounds from the 1850s, with the Herrons grazing cattle on thousands of leased acres. In 1920 a lime deposit drew the WA Portland Cement Company, and a townsite nearby was finally gazetted as Lake Clifton in 1923.
Today Clifton is an uninhabited locality of the City of Mandurah, valued for its lake, woodland and the thrombolite boardwalk in Yalgorup National Park. It draws walkers, birdwatchers and visitors rather than permanent residents.
