Clarkson was named after Lawrence Alexander Clarkson, an early settler and member of the Wanneroo Road Board, and was set aside for residential development as Perth northern corridor expanded along the coast.
Major residential growth came in the late 1990s and 2000s, with master-planned estates including Somerly transforming what had been coastal bushland and market gardens into a large suburb.
The opening of the Clarkson railway station in 2004 on the Joondalup line connected the suburb directly to central Perth and accelerated its development as a northern transport and retail hub.
The Ocean Keys Shopping Centre and surrounding parks, schools and community facilities have since made Clarkson one of the key established centres of the City of Wanneroo coastal growth area.
