Canning Vale was originally part of the East Jandakot Agricultural Area. The name Canning Vale was adopted in 1923, when the locality was incorporated across the neighbouring Gosnells and Canning municipalities, an arrangement that survives today with the suburb still split between the two councils.
Until the late 1970s the area was largely farmland. Its swampy terrain and abundance of permanent fresh water suited market gardens and dairy farms, and the district produce contributed to Perth food supply through the mid-twentieth century.
In the early 1970s the State Government began developing the Canning Vale industrial area. Major operations including the Metropolitan Markets and large distribution centres established there, and the precinct remains a significant industrial and logistics hub.
Large-scale residential growth followed. The Livingston Estate launched in 1986, and through the 1990s and 2000s the suburb filled with new housing estates supported by fresh schools and the Livingston Marketplace shopping centre, which opened in 1998.
Today Canning Vale is one of Perth largest suburbs by population, with more than 34,000 residents at the 2021 census. It combines extensive family housing, a strong multicultural community and the long-established industrial estate to its west.
