Alkimos takes its name from the SS Alkimos, a freighter wrecked off the coast here in 1963 whose rusting remains became a well-known local landmark and the source of enduring shipwreck folklore.
For decades the area was largely undeveloped coastal bushland and dunes, set aside in planning schemes as a future urban growth corridor for Perth northern beaches.
Large-scale residential development began in the 2010s with master-planned estates such as Alkimos Beach, Shorehaven and Trinity, transforming the coast into a new suburb almost from scratch.
Alkimos College opened in 2020 and new primary schools and foreshore parks have followed, making Alkimos one of the fastest-growing communities in the City of Wanneroo.
