Silver Sands sits on the lands of the Binjareb Noongar people, whose connection to the Mandurah estuary and coast runs deep. The suburb fronts the Indian Ocean on a narrow strip of dune and white sand just north of the Mandurah town centre.
The name Silver Sands came from a developer estate marketed in the area. Like neighbouring San Remo it entered popular local usage before being formally adopted, a reflection of the seaside lifestyle the estate promoted.
Silver Sands was gazetted as a distinct Mandurah suburb in 1989 alongside San Remo. Coastal subdivision filled the dunes with homes while planners balanced growth against erosion risk along the three kilometre beachfront.
Today Silver Sands is a compact, family friendly pocket of the City of Mandurah. Residents and holidaymakers share groyne sheltered swimming, grassed foreshore reserves with barbecues and play areas, and easy access to the wider Mandurah waterfront.
