Byford grew up as a rural service township at the foot of the Darling Scarp, south-east of Armadale, with farming, timber and brickworks among its early industries. Its Noongar associations are reflected in local names such as Beenyup, meaning place of water.
For much of the 20th century Byford remained a small semi-rural town within the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, surrounded by paddocks, smallholdings and bushland on the edge of the Perth Hills.
From the 2000s onward Byford became one of Perth fastest-growing fringe communities, with large master-planned estates such as The Glades transforming former farmland into new suburbs and bringing thousands of new residents.
That growth has driven a wave of new schools, parks and sporting facilities, including Byford Secondary College and several new primary schools. Today Byford blends its rural roots with a young, expanding population well suited to community events.
It is a quick run east from Kwinana, just past the free zone, so the delivered price stays low for one of Perth busiest growth corridors.
