Hosting an outdoor movie party in Perth is one of the best ways to gather people who genuinely enjoy each other’s company. Here are nine tips that make the difference between a good night and one people talk about for years.

Choose the right location

The location sets the ceiling on everything else. For a 3m screen, you need approximately 6m of clear space behind for rear projection. Most Perth suburban backyards handle this without issue.

For public parks or reserves, check with your local council. Venues managed by the City of Melville, Town of Cottesloe or your local authority require a parks permit and public performance film licence. See our community event guide for the full permit process.

Power: No outdoor power point? You will need a generator or silent battery inverter from $150, fuel included.

02

Get the screen and projector right

The 3m screen seats up to 50 people. The 5m screen handles up to 300 and the 8m screen up to 1,200. Going too small is the most common mistake. Not sure which to choose? Read our inflatable vs framed screen guide.

03

Provide comfortable seating

Bean bags at $11 each are the upgrade that changes the feel of the entire event. Kmart and Big W carry affordable throw blankets to supplement.

04

Create a theme

A theme lifts a good night into something genuinely memorable. For seven tried-and-tested outdoor cinema themes, see our party theme inspiration guide. The party pack with lasers, disco lights and smoke machine pairs perfectly with any theme.

05

Snacks and drinks worth the effort

Keep food portable and no-cutlery. Taste.com.au finger food collection is worth a browse. For a full strategy, see our BBQ movie night guide.

🍕

Food trucks: FoodTruckHire.com.au lists Perth operators for private events.

06

Set the mood with lighting

Turn off all competing light sources during the screening. Our party pack includes lasers, disco lights and UV lights for the pre-movie atmosphere. Bunnings festoon lights work well for ambient warmth.

Plan for the weather

Check the Bureau of Meteorology Perth forecast before your event. Our inflatable screens handle light breeze well. For gusty conditions use the framed screen or a sheltered position.

☀️

Sun safety: Cancer Council sun safety guidelines. Perth UV is high even in autumn.

08

Create a pre-movie playlist

Thirty to sixty minutes of theme-appropriate music before the film gives latecomers time to arrive. Apple Music, ABC Classic and ABC Jazz are reliable options. With our JBL PartyBox 100 speakers, connect via Bluetooth and it handles itself.

09

Invite the right people

Use Facebook Events to manage RSVPs and share updates for larger gatherings. For schools and community events, our school fundraiser page and community event page include promotion tips and film licensing info.

Little touches that lift a Perth movie party

The difference between a good outdoor movie party and a great one is usually in the details. A handful of bean bags and picnic rugs turns a lawn into a lounge, while a string of warm fairy lights gives the space atmosphere before the film even starts. Keep snacks simple and self-serve, set a clear start time around sunset so nobody waits around in the heat, and have a light jumper or blanket on hand for when the Fremantle Doctor rolls in after dark. If you want the full party feel, add a smoke or bubble machine and a couple of lasers — they cost little and completely change the energy of the night.

Important: public performance film licensing

Public events need a licence through Roadshow Film Distributors or Amalgamated Movies. See our community event guide for details.
