The City of Melville holds one of the most enviable positions of any Perth council area — a long stretch of Swan River frontage running through Applecross, Attadale, Alfred Cove and Mount Pleasant. The Swan River (known to the Whadjuk Noongar people as Derbarl Yerrigan) has shaped the character of Melville’s riverside suburbs for centuries, and today provides some of Perth’s most spectacular settings for outdoor events — including outdoor cinema hire.
The Attadale foreshore and the reserves at Point Walter (Dyoondalup) in Bicton are among the most beautiful public outdoor cinema settings available anywhere in Perth’s southern suburbs. Both sit directly on the Swan River with open water views, established shade trees and flat reserve space ideal for the 5m or 8m community screen. The Swan Canning Riverpark — managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions — covers these and other Swan River reserves, and separate event approvals may apply for riverfront locations.
When planning an outdoor cinema event in Melville, checking the evening weather forecast is essential. The Bureau of Meteorology Western Australia provides accurate Melville-area forecasts. Perth’s autumn season (March to May) delivers the most reliable outdoor cinema conditions — evening temperatures between 17°C and 23°C, low onshore wind, and minimal rainfall. Melville’s riverside suburbs can carry afternoon sea breezes that ease off by early evening, creating ideal still-air conditions for the screen and sound system by 7pm.
The City of Melville runs an active community events programme throughout the year. Notably, the council has run its own free community movie night series — demonstrating how well outdoor cinema resonates with Melville residents. Planning your outdoor cinema hire Melville booking around the events calendar helps you choose the best date and venue.
The City of Melville has a strong network of parks and reserves suitable for outdoor cinema events. You can find City of Melville parks and reserves on the council website, and book a park or reserve for your event through the council’s online application process. Private function bookings are managed through the City of Melville private functions page.
Backyard outdoor cinema hire is the most popular booking type across the City of Melville. Established suburbs like Applecross, Mount Pleasant, Attadale, Bicton and Ardross typically have larger residential blocks well suited to the 3m screen with 20 to 50 guests. Add bean bag hire to your Melville booking at $11 per bag — delivery is free when combined with screen hire. Perth Pop-Up Movies delivers, sets up, runs the night and packs down after the film.
The City of Melville has a strong network of primary and secondary schools across Winthrop, Murdoch, Booragoon, Willagee, Samson and Kardinya. Outdoor cinema fundraiser nights are one of the most effective and enjoyable P&C and P&F fundraiser formats. Our school fundraiser cinema page has full details on what we provide and how to book. The 5m screen suits school events of 80 to 300 guests.
Community outdoor cinema hire in City of Melville parks requires a park or reserve booking through the City of Melville park booking process. Film screenings for a public audience also require a public performance licence from Roadshow Film Distributors or Amalgamated Movies. Perth Pop-Up Movies can assist with guidance on both processes.
The City of Melville includes the major health and education precinct anchored by Fiona Stanley Hospital, St John of God Murdoch Hospital and Murdoch University. This precinct supports thousands of employees across multiple organisations — all potential corporate outdoor cinema hire clients. See our corporate cinema hire page for packages.
The Swan River foreshore venues in Applecross, Attadale and Alfred Cove provide stunning backdrops for wedding outdoor cinema. An evening film as part of a riverside wedding reception is an increasingly popular choice for Melville couples. Perth Pop-Up Movies manages the complete technical setup. See our wedding cinema page for how it works.
From $280. Free delivery to every City of Melville suburb. Full setup included. No surcharges.
The City of Melville takes its name from Viscount Melville — Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville — the British statesman who served as First Lord of the Admiralty during the early nineteenth century. The name was applied to the local government area at its formation, following the colonial naming conventions of early Western Australia that honoured British nobility and naval figures.
The traditional custodians of the Melville area are the Whadjuk Noongar people, who have lived along the Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan) and its surrounding land for tens of thousands of years. The Swan River itself — which forms the natural northern boundary of several City of Melville suburbs — was a central feature of Noongar culture, providing food, fresh water and transport. Point Walter, known in the Noongar language as Dyoondalup, remains a significant Noongar cultural site today and the City of Melville actively collaborates with Noongar traditional owners on its management and interpretation.
European settlement of the Melville area began in the 1830s following the establishment of the Swan River Colony. Early land grants along the Swan River were used for farming and market gardening. The rich sandy loam soils and reliable river access made the area productive for fruit and vegetable growing that supplied the growing Perth settlement. Market gardens across what is now Palmyra, Bicton and Attadale supplied fresh produce to Perth throughout the late nineteenth century.
The Shire of Melville was established in 1917, bringing formal local government to the area. Post-World War II suburban expansion from the late 1940s through the 1960s transformed the agricultural land into residential suburbs. Returning servicemen and young families moved into the developing suburbs of Palmyra, Willagee, Samson and Kardinya, which were built out through the 1950s with affordable housing estates. The State Housing Commission was a significant developer in Willagee in particular, creating one of Perth’s largest concentrations of public housing at that time.
By the 1970s and 1980s, the riverside suburbs of Applecross, Mount Pleasant, Attadale and Ardross had become some of Perth’s most sought-after residential addresses. Proximity to the Perth CBD via the Canning Highway corridor, Swan River frontage and established leafy streets drove property values upward steadily. The City of Melville achieved formal City status in 1994, with a population exceeding the threshold required for city designation. Today the City encompasses approximately 56 square kilometres and a resident population of over 110,000.
The area surrounding Murdoch has been transformed since the 1970s by the development of Murdoch University (established 1975) and more recently the health precinct anchored by Fiona Stanley Hospital (opened 2014) — one of Australia’s largest public hospital complexes. The State Government’s development of the Fiona Stanley and St John of God Murdoch hospital campus has created a major employment and services hub in the City of Melville’s southern suburbs. Heritage information about the broader Melville area can be found through the State Records Office of Western Australia and the local history collections held at City of Melville libraries.
