Outdoor Cinema on One of Perth’s Most Beautiful Coastlines

The City of Rockingham boasts 37 kilometres of Indian Ocean coastline, one of the most spectacular stretches of coast in the Perth metropolitan area. From the calm, protected waters of Cockburn Sound in the north to the open beaches of Safety Bay and Warnbro in the south, Rockingham’s coastal character shapes the entire community’s lifestyle and event culture. Outdoor cinema hire Rockingham events regularly take advantage of this setting, particularly along the Rockingham Beach and Palm Beach foreshore reserves.

The Shoalwater Islands Marine Park sits just off the Rockingham coast, protecting Penguin Island, Seal Island and the surrounding waters. The marine park is home to a resident population of wild bottlenose dolphins, Australian sea lions and little penguins — a wildlife experience that makes Rockingham’s coastal events genuinely unique. An evening outdoor cinema on the Rockingham foreshore with the marine park visible across the water is an experience few Perth suburbs can offer.

Perth summers deliver the warmest outdoor cinema evenings, with temperatures sitting comfortably between 22°C and 28°C well into the night. About Rockingham

A Brief History of Rockingham, Western Australia

Rockingham carries one of the most distinctive origin stories of any Perth suburb. The suburb takes its name directly from a sailing ship, the Rockingham, which arrived on 14 May 1830 carrying settlers recruited by entrepreneur Thomas Peel. The ship ran aground on the beach in Cockburn Sound and was eventually abandoned after failed attempts to refloat her. Settlers who camped near the wreck began using “Rockingham Town” as their address, and the name has remained ever since.

The traditional custodians of the Rockingham area are the Whadjuk Noongar people, who traversed and cared for this land and coastline for an estimated 45,000 years before European settlement. The entire City of Rockingham sits within Whadjuk Noongar Boodja.

The full history of Rockingham, from the shipwreck that gave the suburb its name to the Irish Fenian escape aboard the Catalpa and the development of HMAS Stirling on Garden Island, is documented and preserved at the Rockingham Museum. Housed in a heritage Art Deco building on the corner of Flinders Lane and Kent Street, the museum is managed by the Rockingham District Historical Society and is open Tuesday through Sunday afternoons. Entry is $2.50 for adults.

The Timber Port Era

Rockingham was first surveyed and offered for sale in 1847, but significant development did not occur until 1872 when a railway and jetty were constructed to export jarrah timber and sandalwood from Jarrahdale. The suburb operated as an active timber port until Fremantle’s Inner Harbour opened in 1897, allowing larger ships to bypass Rockingham entirely. By the early 1900s the port had closed, and Rockingham’s transformation into a seaside resort town began.

The Catalpa Escape

In 1876 Rockingham was the site of one of the most daring rescue missions in Australian history. Six Irish Fenian political prisoners were smuggled from a work party near the coast and rowed out to the American whaling ship Catalpa, which then outran a pursuing government vessel and carried the Fenians to freedom in America. A memorial to this event stands near Rockingham Beach and is documented in detail at the Rockingham Museum.

Modern Rockingham

The City of Rockingham achieved formal City status on 12 November 1988. Today it encompasses 260 square kilometres of land, 37 kilometres of Indian Ocean coastline, the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, Penguin Island and the naval facilities of HMAS Stirling on Garden Island. With an estimated resident population of over 154,000 as of 2024, Rockingham is among Australia’s fastest-growing cities.
