Wedding Cinema Hire Perth — Outdoor Cinema at Your Wedding

An outdoor cinema screen at a wedding sounds like something you would see on Pinterest and think “that is beautiful, but probably complicated.” It is not. Here is exactly how it works, where it fits in a wedding day, and what to expect when you book through Perth Pop-Up Movies.

Where it fits in the day

There are four natural spots where a cinema screen adds something real to a wedding:

🎬
Pre-ceremony — A looping montage of the couple: childhood photos, travel shots, candid moments, playing as guests arrive and find their seats. It sets the tone without needing a word said.
🥂
Cocktail hour — Between ceremony and reception, a screen running a curated playlist, favourite film clips, or a highlight reel keeps guests entertained while photos are being taken.
🌙
Late-night wind-down — After the formalities, when the dance floor starts thinning, a classic film playing outside gives guests somewhere comfortable to settle. It keeps people at the venue longer and creates a relaxed end to the evening.
Outdoor reception centrepiece — For venues with garden or lawn spaces, an outdoor cinema becomes the centrepiece of the evening — guests on bean bags under the stars watching a film that means something to the couple.

What size screen?

For most weddings, the 5m screen is the right choice. It is large enough to make an impression and clearly visible for 100 to 200 guests without dominating a venue. For intimate weddings under 50 guests, the 3m screen works beautifully and fits most garden and backyard spaces.

Unsure which size is right? Our screen size guide covers guest numbers, venue types, and viewing distance in detail.

Does it suit the aesthetic?

This is the question most couples ask first. A large cinema screen on a dark evening with warm lighting around it looks cinematic and romantic, not like a corporate presentation. Coloured lighting, candles nearby, and bean bags rather than plastic chairs all help it sit naturally in a wedding setting.

Rear projection (where the projector sits behind the screen) keeps the equipment out of sight and gives a cleaner look. We will flag if your venue does not have enough space for rear projection and work out the best setup for the space.

Sound and music

The cinema sound system integrates cleanly with a DJ or existing PA setup. If you have a band or DJ running the evening, we coordinate with them so there is no overlap or feedback. The sound is professional and clear.

Practical details for Perth venues

Most Perth wedding venues — garden estates in the Swan Valley, beachside venues in Cottesloe or Fremantle, properties in the Perth Hills — have enough outdoor space for a cinema setup. What we need: a flat surface, power access or generator option, and enough darkness around the screen area.

Perth’s autumn evenings (March to May) are ideal for outdoor wedding cinema — warm, calm, and dark by 7pm. Summer weddings work too, just with a later start time for the cinema component.

Frequently asked questions

For a private wedding where all guests are personally invited by the couple, a public performance licence is generally not required. For larger events open to the public or with ticket sales, speak to Roadshow licensing. We are not legal advisors — if in doubt, check with Roadshow directly.
The 3m screen needs roughly a 5m x 5m flat area minimum. Rear projection adds about 6m behind the screen. The 5m screen needs a larger clear area — contact us with your venue dimensions and we will confirm what fits.
Absolutely. We can play anything from a USB, laptop HDMI, Blu-ray, or streaming device. A pre-ceremony photo montage or highlight reel is one of the most popular uses at weddings.
