Why Halls Head outdoor cinema works so well

Halls Head sits on the coast just south of Mandurah city, close enough to civilisation that food trucks can roll in easily, far enough from the city that summer evenings stay quiet and the night sky stays dark. For an outdoor cinema, that combination is hard to beat. Dark skies make the picture pop. Coastal breeze cools the air after sunset. And the Halls Head residential pockets are full of large backyards that suit a 3m screen perfectly.

Halls Head outdoor cinema events split into three groups: backyard birthday parties and family movie nights at private homes, school and community events at venues like Halls Head Primary School and Halls Head Community College, and beachfront or park gatherings along the Avalon Foreshore and surrounds. Each one has different requirements but the same core kit handles all of them.

🌅
Halls Head sunsets are part of the experience. Time the start of your event so guests arrive 30 to 40 minutes before the film. They get the sunset over the coast, the food and drinks period, and then the screen lights up as the sky goes dark. Hard to beat.

Best venues for Halls Head outdoor cinema

Halls Head has more usable outdoor cinema venues than most Peel suburbs. Below are the spots we have either set up at directly or that we routinely recommend to clients.

For council events, beach setups, or any public gathering, you may need a permit from the City of Mandurah and a public performance licence through Roadshow Public Performance Licensing or Amalgamated Movies. Backyards do not require either.

Halls Head outdoor cinema screen sizes

Halls Head events typically run on the 3m or 5m screen. The 8m only comes out for major council or community events. The right size depends almost entirely on attendance.

The time a drone hit our Halls Head screen

True story.

We were running a Halls Head event a couple of years back. Backyard, nice family, well behaved crowd, screen up, projector dialled in, audience seated. About 20 minutes into the film, a drone (not from anyone at the event) clipped the top of our 3m inflatable screen at speed and ripped a tear straight through the upper panel.

The screen deflated in about 90 seconds. The audience went from watching a movie to watching a screen collapse onto the lawn. The kids thought it was the best part of the night. The parents were stunned. We were, frankly, also stunned.

We had a backup 3m screen on the truck (always do, for exactly this kind of moment), and we had it up and running again inside 20 minutes. Show finished. Everyone got their movie.

The lesson: outdoor cinema is a live event. Things go wrong. The difference between a stressful night and a story you tell forever is whether your operator carries backup gear, has the experience to swap it out fast, and stays on site for the full event. Every Halls Head outdoor cinema booking we do carries backup projector, backup amplifier, and on the smaller events a second screen if logistics allow. The drone story is now part of the briefing every crew member gets.

The full clip from the night is on our YouTube channel.

No additional power needed for backyard events, the 3m screen plugs into a standard household outlet. For beach, park or oval events, a generator or silent battery inverter is required. Both are $150 with fuel included.

Every Halls Head outdoor cinema booking carries backup gear: backup projector, backup amplifier, and full repair kit. The operator stays on site for the duration of the event. If anything fails, we swap to backup and the show continues. The drone story above is exactly that scenario, and exactly why we never run an event without backup equipment.
Yes for the 3m screen, in a hall or large indoor space with at least 6m of clear length, 4m of width and 4m ceiling height. The Halls Head Recreation Centre and similar venues work well. The 5m and 8m screens are outdoor only due to height.
Yes. School fundraiser bookings typically run on the 5m community screen ($600). Add generator if no mains power on the oval. Public performance licence required, we can source through Roadshow on the school’s behalf for licence cost plus 10 percent. School P&Cs in Halls Head and Mandurah have run successful family movie nights this way for years.
